Dahlia Watkins

Dahlia Watkins

College student

Location: Durham, North Carolina
Degree / Program: Associate’s degree in Computer Information Technology and Networking Technology

After serving eight years in the army, Iraq War Veteran Dahlia Watkins was ready to focus on the next phase of his career. Having witnessed the value of computers in the military, he knew information technology was a growing field, and one he wanted to pursue as a civilian.
Dahlia enrolled at Wake Tech while working full-time as a security officer. “It was rough – trying to balance work and school,” he says. He decided taking classes online might be the answer; he felt he was disciplined enough to do well, and he was right. “I was a little nervous about it at first,” Dahlia says, “but online classes really worked well for me.”
Dahlia has now completed his Associate’s degree in Computer Information Technology and is working on another one, in Networking Technology. He’s on target to complete his studies in 2010 and is confident he’ll have the skills he needs to enter the job market.  “Wake Tech provides a great learning environment,” he says, “even if you take classes online. There’s a support system in place, and people available to help you.”
